Jason Newsted Announces Art Exhibition

Former Metallica bassist Jason
Newsted is about to get all arty – with his first exhibition of paintings.This happens at the Micaela Gallery in San Francisco, from May 6 to June 27. According to Blabbermouth, Newsted had the following to say about his skills with a brush:

“I am possessed by an undercurrent of kinetic energy that I have channelled through pure artistic creation for as long as I can remember, beginning with childhood drawings and songs, followed by teenage rock and roll based ideas, and ultimately, internationally recognized musical recordings and live performances.

“With the title of most decorated heavy metal bass guitarist of all time intact, my purpose has shifted from making crazy and colourful music, to making crazy and colourful paintings.”

The Fremont Hotel and Casino

Lemme tell you about my hotel in Vegas… the Fremont Hotel and Casino in downtown Las Vegas.

The place has got history. It’s been around for over 50 years. Decent little casino, a few nice places to eat, and a nice bar to sit and play video poker at without having to wait for the waitresses to bring you a drink (which, if you’re at a table, isn’t long).

It’s also one of the places that Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal was in charge of back when the mafia ran Vegas. You’d know the movie… Casino. One of the best movies (and books) of all time.

The Fremont opened in May of 1956 on Fremont Street. It’s on the “four corners”… ya got the Four Queens, the Golden Nugget, Binions Horseshoe, and the Fremont.

A lot of people still think that downtown Vegas is shady and nasty. Not the case anymore. Fremont Street is no longer a street that can be driven down and it’s covered with a LED canopy that they refer to as “Viva Vision” or the “Fremont Street Experience”. It’s an amazing light show that happens every hour when the sun goes down. The lights on the casinos go dark and the show begins. It’s definitely something that you have to see while visiting Vegas.

Now back to the Fremont Hotel…

I originally had a stay booked at Paris, on the strip. But that was when it was a different kind of trip to Vegas. But since the plans changed, it turned into a guys trip to Vegas. Mike and I both like the vibe downtown. We’re more comfortable playing in the casinos there. Not as “cool and trendy” and you really don’t have to impress anyone.

So I decided to book us a couple rooms at the Fremont.

The rooms were newly remodeled, looked really nice in the pictures, and the reviews were decent other than people complaining about the size of the rooms, which, for me, not a problem since I didn’t plan on having parties up in there. But then again, this is Vegas and you know what they say… what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. Well, unless it’s an STD. Yeah… gross. People also complained because of this or that and would say “we normally stay at the Bellagio or Mandalay Bay or the Venetian and this place was so dirty and ugly and we’ll never stay there again”. Automatically, those reviews are tossed out the window. If you’re going to compare a Holiday Inn Express to a Ritz Carlton, then you’re an idiot. Let’s see, use your brain… a room that cost $35 a night compared to a room that cost over $150 a night (minimum)? Sometimes I wonder how certain people make it through life…

Anyway…

The place was great. Nice lobby, nice rooms, nice casino and an amazing staff. I’d lose money at the tables but had a great time doing it ‘cause the dealers were great! And the waitresses we’re pretty fast, too.

Bottom line, if you’re going to Vegas for gambling, the Fremont’s a decent choice. If you’re looking for clubs and partying, you might wanna find a place on the strip. But I’ve always liked Fremont Street. It’s a fun place to hang out, the casinos are very close by (a 30 second walk from one to another), and it’s pretty easy on the wallet. Even the Golden Nugget, which would be comparable to the Mirage, Paris, or one of the other decent places on the strip, is pretty reasonably priced.

And if you stay there, get yourself a players card and use it every time you play. You’ll get discounts at the Fremont (and other Boyd Gaming properties) when you log in to the BConnected players card site…

The Sights… Bodies: the Exhibition

This trip to Vegas turned out to be a little different than originally planned. I ended up heading out with a buddy of mine from El Paso and when we do Vegas, we don’t see a lot. We’ll stay downtown and usually end up playing a lot of blackjack and quite a bit of video poker at the bar. We usually don’t leave the hotel and if we do, it’s usually just a stroll down Fremont St. I mentioned previously that I hoped to make it out to see and do a lot more “touristy” stuff.

Didn’t happen.

What did happen was a good time at the tables and video poker at the bar. Yeah, good times but them were some expensive drinks (due to the loss of dollars)!

But I did find time to drive the strip down to the Luxor to see Bodies: the Exhibition.

My buddy Mike, who I head out to Vegas every few years with, didn’t really care to see Bodies: the Exhibition. When I told him that we’d be seeing Bodies: the Exhibition, he complained that it’s not his idea of a good time in Vegas. When he goes to Vegas, he drinks and gambles, not goes out to see, as he puts it, “dead people”. He told me he’ll go in but he’ll probably end up just sneaking out one of the exits.

Mike ended up loving it.

It’s not just a place where you look at “dead people”, it’s actually quite educational. It’s an inside look at the human body, if you will. You’ll see the tiniest of organs with descriptions of what that particular organ does. You’ll see what happens to the brain after a stroke. If you’re a smoker, you may end up quitting after seeing the difference between the lungs of a healthy person next to the lungs of someone who has spent most of their life smoking.

It shows you how the body works and how complicated and delicate it is. It shows you how your muscles and organs all work together. It’ll give you a whole new appreciation of life and the human body.

The process they use to preserve the bodies and organs is known as “polymer preservation”. It basically prevents decay and depending on the size of the organ, could take from a week to an entire year. It also makes sure you don’t have to hold your nose throughout the whole exhibit. I told people here at the station that one thing I plan on doing in Vegas was seeing Bodies and the typical response is “Eeww, gross!”. Even Mike was complaining about it. But actually seeing it in “real life” will change your mind. It really is quite fascinating.

Whether you’re going to Vegas with the guys/girls, or you’re doing the “family vacation”, Bodies is one of the many exhibits and attractions that you’ll want to add to your list of things to see and do.

Here’s a little bit of info on ticket prices. And just a little money saver, if you find a Vegas guide or magazine in your hotel room, flip through it ‘cause you might find a coupon that’ll save you a few bucks per ticket…

Vacation time can’t come soon enough!

As you know, I have a little vacation time coming up and I’m going to Vegas. I love that town. LOVE it. And when I win the Powerball, I might even move there. But only if I win big cause Vegas wouldn’t be any fun if I actually had to go to work so I’d have to be rich to live there.

Anyway…

I got this trip coming up in 3 weeks. I’ve been to Vegas, what, 8, 9 times? And there’s always something new to see. Shoot, there’s old stuff I STILL haven’t seen. And then there are new versions of the old stuff. Like the volcano at the Mirage. If you’ve been to Vegas, you’ve prolly seen the volcano eruption. Oh, but they changed it. I haven’t seen the newly, redesigned volcano, but if you look at the Mirage volcano webpage, it appears to have music now and is choreographed like the Bellagio Fountains. Treasure Island used to have a pirate show. Now it’s a song and dance spectacular with beautiful people that you stand no chance with. Now those are a couple of the free attractions you’ll find in Vegas. There’s just so much more to do and not enough time to do it. I’ll be there for three nights and that’s not gonna be nearly enough time to see and do it all.

But here’s my wish list…

CSI: The Experience (love CSI!)
Bodies: The Exhibition
Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition
Stratosphere rides (I’m determined to finally get the nerve to ride one)
Penn and Teller at the Rio
The Beatles – Love
The Eiffel Tower at Paris (every time I head out there, I plan to check this out. It’ll happen this time!)
Poker (I play online but it’s time to actually sit down and play in a REAL card game. Unfortunately, my hotel doesn’t have a poker room so maybe we’ll try the room at Binions)
Win lots of money on a slot machine just so I can get my room comped. I prefer table games but it can take a long time to win big at blackjack so I figured if I just drop a couple quarters in a one armed bandit, I can win and live happily ever after. Especially if my room is comped.
Gold and Silver Pawn Shop (Pawn Stars, baby!)
~~Get a tattoo and/or married after a night of drunken debauchery~~ (c’mon, they don’t call it “sin city” for nothin’!)

New Years Resolution

I guess since everyone else has at least one, I figured I should have one as well. I'm talking about a New Years Resolution. I don't make them cause I'm lazy. That's the bottom line. I don't want to commit to anything that I have to force myself to do, such as eating better, working out or whatever. If I'm not gonna get up and do it, I'm gonna end up flaking on my resolution.

BUT... I like blogging. So my New Years Resolution is to blog more. Once I start blogging, I wonder why I don't do it more. It's weird, though, cause when I think about blogging, I simply don't wanna do it but once I type 3 or 4 words, I can't type fast enough!

So I'm gonna spend more time blogging. That's my New Years Resolution and it's all gonna start... tomorrow.

Hey, right now I got a movie I wanna watch that I've had saved on my DVR for for about 2 years...

down to read the LC Sun News. This is what I saw...

Courthouse closes early for TWEF

LAS CRUCES - Friday's kickoff of The Whole Enchilada Fiesta wasn't until 6 p.m., but more than 100 public employees got to start celebrating early.

State District Court on Picacho Avenue in Las Cruces closed at noon Friday for the three-day fiesta; trials, hearings and other court activity originally scheduled for Friday will be rescheduled. The district attorney's office closed even earlier - 11 a.m. "in observance of The Whole Enchilada Fiesta," according to a note on the door.

It's unclear if those offices' employees will be paid for a full day Friday. Deputy District Court Administrator Mark Perea and District Attorney Susana Martinez were unavailable for comment Friday.

The 29th annual fiesta, which takes place at the Meerscheidt Sports Complex on Hadley Avenue, includes music and a carnival and culminates with Sunday's three-hour preparation of the world's largest enchilada. Admission is $3 and between 40,000 to 45,000 people attended in 2008, organizers estimated.

Other area government offices did not close early for TWEF, according to spokesmen for the city and county.

The Sun-News was able to reach state District Judge Fernando Macias of Las Cruces, who said he didn't think the closure for TWEF was new this year.

But that doesn't mean everything stops for the fun, said Macias, who didn't plan to attend due to a heavy caseload next week.

"I have too much work to do," he said.

Glad to see my tax dollars going to good use.

I know, I haven't blogged in months but I promise to start doing it again. Not to come up with excuses, but I got one... I've been busy! That, and I'm lazy.

I take a lot of pictures and I wanna post them in places. So, I'm gonna post pics here. Yeah, I send them to my Facebook and Myspace page (simply cause it's so easy) but I'll allow you to peep into my boring little life right here on the Magic 105 site. If you've ever thought that being a DJ on da radio would be all parties and rockstars, you're about to be quite disapointed.

So bear with me and I'll have fresh postings real soon. I promise!

This past weekend was a busy one around Las Cruces and El Paso. Friday night, Look Who’s Dancing was at the Pan Am Center. On Saturday, One Night of Queen was there. Also on Saturday, you had a choice between George Lopez or Slipknot in El Paso. Technically, if you waited till Saturday to get your tickets, you woulda been outta luck on either one of those shows… they both sold out. Me and Lyndsey headed out to the Slipknot show, and Money and his girl Tara drove out as well.

The day started off OK. Woke up, grabbed lunch, stressed about work, and then drove out to the show. Little did we know that once we got there, we’d end up having to park on the other side of El Paso!

OK, so I’m exaggerating a bit. We only had to park about 3 blocks away from the venue. It’s still a long way to walk when you don’t even like walking down the hall, ok? And it was cold, too. Pablo ended up in the same boat, different parking lot.

So we head on in, not expecting to be packed in like sardines. And rubbing up against sweaty guys who just got out of the mosh pit is not my idea of a good time. Anyway, we find a safe place to hang out with some other Bravo Mic peeps and get ready for the show to begin.

Due to the fact that we couldn’t find parking and we’re delayed in getting into the venue, we missed Trivium but we got to see some of Coheed and Cambria, and got to see all of Slipknot (check out my pics here). And I gotta say, Slipknot put on one heck of a show. Kinda loud, but I think it’s simply because I’m turning into an old fart. Haha

So we’re all pumped up after the show, but ready to head back to Cruces. Pablo heads out first while Lyndsey and I hang out for a bit. And this is where it all goes downhill…

My cellular telephone rings… it’s Pablo. Bad news… his car got towed.

Now I’m worried and hoping that my car is still parked where I left it. So me and LG head out to the car and find out it’s right where we left it.Whew. In the car and off we are to pick up Pablo and Tara so that we can make our way to the tow place.

Easier said than done.

We stop and pick up Pablo and Tara, then embark on our journey only to discover that the directions that we received from the tow place are completely wrong. Make a left here, turn right there, stop and stick your finger... um, you get the idea. Even the GPS on Lyndsey's phone was freakin' confused! After driving around in circles for about an hour, we thought we were on the right track... and so was the longest train ever. We waited for this super train to pass only to find oud that it wasn't going to. The dang thing stopped. Right in front of us. Right when we we're hot on the trail of finding this god forsaken tow place.

OK, not a big deal but it was at the time. What else could go wrong, right?

We back up and head back in the direction that we've already gone KNOWING that we were prolly feet from the impound lot before the train decided to stop for a potty break.

Stupid train --> <-- Stupid train.

To make a long story short (too late for that, I guess), we found our destination shortly thereafter. Pablo and Tara get their car and me and Lyndsey head off to find some Taco Cabana (after a much needed bathroom break).

Yeah... this is how us radio people spend our Saturday nights. Exciting, huh?

Oh, and to top it off... come to find out, someone hit my car in the parking lot at the show and cracked my tailight.

I Want My Blankie

I wanna go to sleep. I'm sitting here at work right now and I can barely keep my eyes open. I wish I had a cool story to tell you as to why I am so tired, but I don't. What it is that is making me so sleepy is the pill I took two hours ago.

I get headaches. Migraines. They can get pretty bad at times. So I went to see a doctor. My doc was outta the office so I had to see someone else and he prescribed me Topamax to prevent my headaches. The problem with Topamax is that it makes you stupid. That was one of the biggest reasons why I decided to stop taking it. I couldn't spell. The easiest words, I'd have trouble spelling. In additions to being stupid, other reported side effects were:

Walking funny (yeah... walking funny)
Blood clots
Vision problems
Hallucinations (although that seems kinda fun)
Suicidal thinking
Kidney stones
Hemorrhoids (and that doesn't sound like a good time to me)

And a whole lot more...

So, I decided to head back and see my regular healthcare provider. She gave me a couple things to take... one is for when I get those migraines and the other was a pill to take everyday. Twice a day, in fact (I can't remember the name right now). The problem is that about an hour or two of taking it, I get sleepy. Whether I'm at work or at home on the couch watching TV, I get sleepy. And when I get sleepy, I wanna, well... sleep.

Now here's my problem... I'm at work. And the bosses don't like it too much when their employees sleep on the job. But I'm kinda curious to know what would happen if I did fall asleep here at work. Would someone wake me up? I bet Money would. He seems like the type of guy who would wake me up. Ya know, after taking a Sharpie to my face. And there's not a lot of places to run off to when a quick nap is all that's needed. There are a couple empty offices where one might be able to slip into but I don't think it'll be comfortable enough to sleep in. You'd have the constant worry that someone is gonna come pokin' around and find you sleeping peacefully under a desk.

So at this point, I think I'm screwed. I cant go home. I'm not sick so I can't exactly use that excuse. I just have to suck it up and stay awake. It's times like these that make me wish I worked for Google. Don't they have nap time or something??

Anyway... I need to get back to work. I'll blog about something a little more worth your time tomorrow.

I know it's been a couple weeks since I last spit out a blog, so here comes a new one. Prolly nothin' to write home about, but whatever. I'm dying. I have a bad headache. But neither sleet or snow or wind or DUST is going to keep me from blogging today. The fact that I really have nothing to say isn't going to stop me either!

In my last blog, I mentioned my life long dream of having my pictures show up in Google Earth. Well, that dream is about to come true. A week ago, I found out that my pictures will be in Google Earth. Yippee. But they won't be up for a couple weeks. So, once they release the next update, while your cruisin' around Las Vegas, you'll be able to click on the little blue boxes and see some of my pictures.

Yeah, yeah, I know that's not exciting like winning the lottery but it's just kinda neat having your pictures out there where they can be seen by thousands of people. Know what I mean?

Aight, I gotta run... commercials need to be made. Me and the Money have vowed to blog at least once a week so make sure you check back often.

For me, however, it was more the fact that we haven't been able to upload pictures to our blogs in the past couple of months and I'm not smart enough to figure out what the problem is. So now, I have a new blog as well. And I'm damn excited to be able to post my picture of me as Lenka.
